The sense of betrayal overwhelmed any fear of death as the hatchet descended. He’d given as good as he’d got, but there were two of them and he didn’t want to hurt his wife.

He’d walked in on them, his wife and her lover, embracing. He shouted at the other man to get away from her.

The two separated, and all of them began arguing. He turned to his wife to ask her why. While he was turned, the other man struck.

From the floor he heard the other man insist it was the chance they had been waiting for.

The brothers stood in the dusty street, facing each other. They were alone; the rest of the town had sought shelter against the imminent gunfight.

“Annabelle’s mine, brother.” One said.

“Over my dead body.”

The two continued to stare, hands hovering over their six shooters, vibrating with anticipation.

They knew each other very well, each narrowing of the eyes or twitch of the lips was noted, but still they waited for the perfect moment.

They were drawing the fatal breath when someone appeared at the saloon door.

“Annabelle!” they both called, “what are you doing?”

“Jimmy I’ll be yours forever.”

“Why Gorth, to what do I owe the honor?” Galin said with a mocking bow.

“Don’t mock me brother, or I shall leave you to rot in exile.”

“I don’t believe so. It was a long trip, you must have something important to discuss.”

“Garath has become a nuisance. It’s time he be removed from the line of succession.”

“Murder our own brother? You recall why father sent me away, don’t you?”

“Father is dying. If you assist me, I will lift your exile.”

“As you wish, brother.”

It was the day after Gorth’s ascension when Galin’s blade found him.

The two children tugged on the toy with pintsized might.

“It’s my turn!” one screamed.

“No! You just got it!” the other responded.

They two broke off their cries, but neither released the toy, as their mother entered the room with footsteps like thunder.

“What’s going on here?” she demanded.

“It’s my turn mommy!” one insisted.

“No, it’s not. You had it last time!” the other countered.

Their mother sighed, “Every day this week I’ve had to resolve this issue. If you can’t learn to share, neither of you can have it.”

With that she snatched the toy and left.

“I set a great task before you today, a series of challenges and riddles. To overcome them is to be raised above all others and to know that you are great.”

The students began attempting to decipher the series of math problems before them, occasionally glancing up at the Pedestal of Greatness, upon which the first to finish would sit.

After a half an hour into their exam when their teacher spoke up, “I’ll give you a hint: you have to tackle it from a right angle.”

A few more minutes passed and one of the students jumped up: “Eureka!”

It was his brother’s birthday and their mother had bought his favorite cupcake. It sat, taunting Jack, in the refrigerator.

Jack waddled towards the kitchen, his small legs barely supporting him. His mother was folding laundry, his brother at the toy store.

In the kitchen, Jack stared up at his adversary. He staggered towards the gargantuan device that kept all the delicious things, kept them from his pudgy fingers.

He reached up towards the door handle. What luck! Jack had grown enough to grasp it. After opening the door, he took the cupcake and waddled back to the living room.

“That Grabowski! How his meddling vexes me!”

“And how is that master?” his hunchback asked.

“The rapscallion had the audacity to break into my chambers while I was in a delicate situation with the governor’s daughter. She fainted straight away!”

“Most unfortunate master.”

“Fortunately I was able to take up my rapier, although I was forced to defend myself in my undergarments. I had him cornered, at my mercy, and I was about to end his disruptive interference when a wardrobe malfunction reversed our positions. Laughing, he took my favorite hat, and the governor’s daughter, before escaping!”

“Most unfortunate master.”
