The steps of the evening commuters disrupted the dusting
of snow that had fallen during the workday. The city’s office workers waited in
neat little rows to board the train. It trundled into the station and opened
its doors. The patient lines immediately disintegrated into a stampede. No
quarter was asked or given as people shoved on to the identical cars. Those
that could seized the few available seats. Everyone else squished together,
packing tighter and tighter as more and more people forced their way on. The
train stuttered out of the station, sending the passengers bouncing back and forth.
