Once the brave speeches were done and the spears had been
banged against the shields the two armies settled into the dull realities of
the siege. The defenders of the castle, whose white stone had turned grey by
grit and neglect, huddled around their wells watched the skies for missiles of
all types. The besiegers raided the crops of the surrounding countryside and
made camp, all under the flapping banner of the sword and lake, which was
displayed as to be constantly in view of the castle. As the weather turned,
everyone thought less of glory and more of warmth.
