The children did their best to be silent and still as they huddled under the floorboards. Above them they could hear the footsteps. The bestial men did their best to tread lightly, but all it accomplished was to make the boards creak longer as they paced their way through the small house, searching for the children.
They endured it with noiseless fear, hoping that none of the savage raiders would look under the carpet and find the trapdoor in their inexorable search for victims.
“We need to sneak out,” one of the children whispered to the eldest.
“Shhh, they’ll hear.”
