Jimmy slipped out of bed after his mother was asleep. He stole out of the house, car keys in hand. Having learned from previous attempts, he put the car in neutral and pushed it to the edge of the driveway.
Sufficiently distant from his mother’s sharp ears, he started the car and started his night.
It didn’t last long. He rather quickly crashed into a tree. His mother arrived before the second squad car, and she wasn’t happy.
“Are you okay?” she asked, terror in her voice.
“He seems fine, ma’am,” the officer said.
Her demeanor shifted quickly after that.
