Sometimes you don’t realize what you have given up until
long after it is gone.
He learned that
the moment he began chewing the rice. The soft grains shed their flavor as he ate:
saffron, clams, shrimp, the list went on.
He had forgotten the feeling that place gave him. The
food took him back there. The thought of what he had given up brought tears to
his eyes.
He continued eating, savoring every bite. Now he could
taste the chorizo; he could never get it like this at home. The flavor was
unique, just the way he remembered it.
