With that flash and bang in the night, we went from rabble-rousers
to true patriots. Least, that’s how we felt. The newspapers next day disagreed,
calling us “cowardly terrorists” and “malicious dissidents.” We fled the city
when the police started knocking on doors in the neighborhood. They imprisoned
our families, to try to get us to come down from the mountains. It only stoked
the flames of patriotism the burned within us. When they finally put our loved ones
to death we retaliated by maiming the families of the police when we could get
them, regular quislings when we couldn’t.
