I did my best to act like I hadn’t noticed anything. I looked down at my food and did my best to keep eating.
“Is something wrong, dear?” she asked.
“Hm?” I replied, looking up. “Oh, no. Just some big deadlines coming up at work.”
She smiled. I quickly looked back down at my plate. It suddenly occurred to me that there might be something in my food. I dropped my fork.
“I need to get going. There’s some things I need to take care off at the office.”
“Okay, sweetie. Don’t forget your lunch.” She handed me my bag.
