“I’ve got you!”
Alex shouted, straining against Mark’s weight.
Mark swung freely, dangling several feet below the lip of
the crevasse.
“Don’t let go, Alex!”
Alex wrapped the rope around his wrists and set his legs
in the deep snow. “Don’t worry, buddy. You’re not going anywhere.”
Mark relaxed and let the swinging subside before
assessing his situation. Below, the hole descended to an unknown depth. The
rope attaching him to Alex appeared sound. The loops of his walking poles were
still around his wrists and he could hear his axes clinking behind him.
“Keep me steady,” he shouted up.
