100 Words a Day 1056

With the passing of the king, the religious orders that had shepherded the people turned to wolves and began preying on the scared, vulnerable populous. Fiery sermons outlining the horrors awaiting those who strayed from the narrow path outlined by the Church. Collusion between corrupt priests and greedy barons quickly stripped villagers of the wealth they acquired under the steady hand of the late king. Now, fearful peasants huddle in their villages, terrified that some supernatural horror or roving band of knights will take their lives, never mind their meager possessions.

Theirs is a dreary land ripe for new heroes.
