100 Words a Day 1057

“You’ve really got to start being more careful,” Morg said, threading his stitching needle.

Ulfar grunted, “That’s why I keep you around. So I don’t have to be.”

Morg rolled his eyes. “One day someone is going to stab you and I won’t be there to put you back together.”

Morg clamped the wound shut with his demon hand. “Hold this.”

Ulfar hissed, but held his leg as tightly as he could. Once Morg was satisfied, he began passing the needle and thread through his friend’s torn flesh.

“I already know this one is going to heal stiff.”

Ulfar shrugged.

100 Words a Day 1056

With the passing of the king, the religious orders that had shepherded the people turned to wolves and began preying on the scared, vulnerable populous. Fiery sermons outlining the horrors awaiting those who strayed from the narrow path outlined by the Church. Collusion between corrupt priests and greedy barons quickly stripped villagers of the wealth they acquired under the steady hand of the late king. Now, fearful peasants huddle in their villages, terrified that some supernatural horror or roving band of knights will take their lives, never mind their meager possessions.

Theirs is a dreary land ripe for new heroes.

100 Words a Day 1055

A heavy cloud obscured the moonlight that had glittered across the wet ground and illuminated the path through the swamp, leaving them in darkness.

“Shit, what do we do now?”

“Can’t even travel by feel; it all feels squishy.”

The two men considered their situation for several moments.

“Look!”

“What?”

“Behind you. Lights.”

“Shit, close your eyes!”

“Why?”

“Those are swamp wisps. Don’t look!”

“Those are the town lights. We must almost be there. I bet they’ll lead us in.”

“No!”

The silence was broken by squishy footsteps moving away from the path. They were cut off by a scream.

100 Words a Day 1054

My ability to navigate was not appreciably improved by the rising of the sun. A chilly fog wound its way through the pines, block out the sun. The damp soil muted my footsteps. Only the call of some lonely mountain bird somewhere behind me broke the silence.

The mist penetrated my heavy traveling clothes. But the exertion and the thin air meant I was regularly wiping sweat from my brow. The impenetrable fog meant I had no idea if the small trail I had found led deeper into the mountains or towards the small village I had set out from.

100 Words a Day 1053

I slurred, “there’s something in my drink,” to myself before blackness overtook me.

I bucket-full of frigid water snapped my eyes open. I was in a room of indeterminate size, but the space around me was illuminated by a number of candles on tall stands, arranged in a circle. Two people, at least I hoped they were people, stood before me, the shape of their bodies and their faces hidden by voluminous robes with deep hoods.

“Please allow me to apologize Mr. Aegis for your abrupt awakening. The urgency of our mission prevents us from offering a more civilized reception.”
