100 Words a Day 811


I changed lanes across the dotted line and pressed on the accelerator, passing the lumbering minivan that had been in front of me. The road began to slope upward and the van shrank behind me. She had driven up to the cabin earlier in the day. My phone buzzed, a text message. I reached for my phone, jerking back and grabbing the wheel when I felt car begin to slide onto the gravel that lined the road. I reached for it again, this time careful to keep the wheel straight. I unlocked my phone: I’m waiting for you, it said.
