The trenches spider webbed out and away from the hill,
into the surrounding lowlands. They were empty of the soldiers that had
attempted to encircle the hill with earthworks, flooded by the defenders in a risky
and complex engineering project that drained the nearby marsh of boggy water.
This ended the siege rather suddenly and left the fort with a dirty, serpentine
lake at it’s base. Broken spear shafts stuck out of the brown water, abandoned
by men fleeing the flood. Below the water still wearing their rusting armor
were the corpses of soldiers unable to escape the rushing water.
