The inhabitants of the hamlet were a sorry lot. Fierce
shunning by the surrounding villages had resulted in considerable inbreeding of
the populace in a region already subject to a limited gene pool. As a
consequence, all the residents of the small community were alike in certain
features, drooping eyelids that gave them the appearance of perpetual
intoxication, a deformed mouth that resulted in a grotesque distortion of their
speech, and a sixth finger on each hand. The remarkable isolation further
produced a startling change in their religious observations and they were
routinely condemned as heretics of the highest order.
