100 Words a Day 934

The silvery elevator door slid shut. The passengers were silent as the metal box was lowered by thick cables and Sisyphean machinery. Despite their proximity, not a single person acknowledged another. Some stared hard at the floor or the wall. One looked at the door, studying their distorted reflection with the same intensity they normally reserved for grooming. Another looked at their phone, furiously trying to connect with some total stranger who was nearby and equally free that evening. The elevator eventually reached the lobby and disgorged its fleshy contents before sealing itself up and ascending with a mechanical sigh.
