Jessica pressed the indicator light on her desk in
response to the question.
“Yes, Jessica,” the teacher said. The light dimmed.
“The foundation of our beautiful civilization is built
upon the suppression and elimination of all the things that make us different.
Things that make us animals. Like gross B.O. or emotions that are too strong.”
“Very good, Jessica. Does anyone have anything else to
add?”
A few indicator lights lit up on the teacher’s console.
“James,” she said.
“And…” he paused, embarassed to say the word, “reproduction.”
He looked down at his console, face reddening behind his beige facemask.
